Company Background

The best kinds of online accounts payable and receivable tools are easy to use yet provide the features you need to save time on these critical-yet-tedious tasks.

Plooto does a pretty good job accomplishing those goals. Founded in 2015 by Serguei Kloubkov and Hamed Abbasi, Plooto aims to help businesses streamline their AP/AR. The young company has grown to support over 4,000 businesses of varying sizes.

Plans & Pricing

Plooto offers one plan for $25/business/mo, meaning running two companies would cost you $50/mo. Customers can send 10 payments per business for free. After that, it’s $0.50/domestic transaction until the next month rolls around and your payment count resets.

There are transaction fees to keep in mind as well. These include the following:

  • $9.99/international transaction
  • $1.99/check payment
  • $3 CRA payments (in Canada)

Now, accountants and bookkeepers can use Plooto to manage payments for their clients, too. Accountants and bookkeepers must pay $25/business/mo as well. So if you work with three clients, you’d pay $75/mo, not including any transaction fees listed above.

Plooto offers a free demo and a 30-day free trial to help you make your purchasing decision. The free trial comes with 10 free transactions. If you make more transactions during your trial period, you’ll pay according to the standard transaction rates mentioned above.

Overall, the pricing is reasonably affordable, assuming you don’t do a lot of business internationally or via paper check.

General Features
Accounts Payable

Accounts payable is a huge pain for many small businesses. You need to pay your vendors in full and on-time, but it’s a tedious task that’s ripe for human error — not to mention the ever-lingering worry of fraud.

Plooto alleviates many of these problems by letting you set up an unlimited number of approvers for payment approval. Plus, you can set different approval tiers based on the criteria you can choose.

Thanks to Plooto’s integrations (discussed later), your accounting software will always be up to date with payment information as well.

Accounts Receivable

Plooto does well on the receivables side as well. You can add an unlimited number of vendors and customers to your system, making it easier to collect payments and monitor invoice statuses in one place.

Speaking of invoices, Plooto’s accounting software integrations let you pull invoices into Plooto automatically for monitoring. You can set up an automation to notify your customer of the invoice and send them instructions on paying it. Plooto then allows your customers to pay via credit card, direct debit, and other options.

Once again, the integration with your accounting software keeps your books updated.

Other features include payment status monitoring, pre-authorized debit agreement setup, and automatic account reconciliation.

Check Payments From Online

Do you pay by check? Plooto lets you do that too. After running a bill through the usual approval process, you can opt to cut and mail a check instead of paying online. Plooto handles it all for you instead of making you do it yourself.

Add-Ons

Plooto doesn’t integrate with a wide array of software solutions like some of the most well-known options on the market.

However, they have solid integrations with various financial institutions and certain small business accounting software applications.

First of all, financial institutions. Plooto integrates with many banks and other institutions throughout the US and Canada. Since you can link as many accounts as you want, it’s easy to send and receive payments.

Then, Plooto integrates with both Quickbooks and Xero. Both integrations are two-way, meaning both Plooto and your accounting application use each other’s data. Plooto might pull in invoices or bills for accounts payable/receivable automation, whereas your accounting software automatically logs payment data in your books.

Ease of Use

Plooto’s platform is easy and satisfying to use. There are just a few menus to get used to, so it should only take you a few minutes to get up and running.

Speaking of getting up and running, Plooto walks you through the whole setup process. After you register, you’re asked for some basic information about you and your business. From there, you’ll have to upload a form of photo ID, link your bank account(s), and connect Quickbooks or Xero (whichever one you use).

Once you’re done with all this, you can begin using the platform.

Customer Support

Plooto says that their Experience Team — their customer service — “primarily” operates Monday-Friday 9am – 5pm. They don’t say “only”, which means they may be accessible outside business hours.

That said, they do say that you’ll have the fastest response times during business hours.

Final Word

Plooto is refreshingly simple in nearly every aspect, too. Its UI is intuitive, pricing is easy to understand, and support is quite accessible if you ever have issues. AP and AR are easy to manage and automate with Plooto, and the integrations with banks, Quickbooks, and Xero streamlines your operations. The only glaring downside, aside from high international transaction fees, is that Plooto is relatively barebones compared to competitors. Receipt scanning and some other helpful tools aren’t found in Plooto for the moment. Overall, Plooto offers an excellent platform for businesses that do business domestically and need a simple AP/AR automation tool to streamline these areas.
