Company Background

Square was founded in 2009 by Jim McKelvey and Jack Dorsey. It has grown into one of the most popular payment solutions for small and medium businesses in many countries. After the acquisition of Weebly, it launched the powerful eCommerce builder – Square Online – to make it easier for brands to create beautiful storefronts.

It’s free to get started with Square Online and access the basic features. Instead of a monthly fee, you pay 2.9% + $0.30 when you make a sale. If you want more robust features, you can take advantage of the paid plans.

The Professional plan costs $12/m (billed annually at $144). It builds on the free tier with features like inventory sync, Instagram integration, and multiple delivery options. It also includes the ability to map a custom domain, remove Square branding, and a free domain for the first year.

The middle plan, Performance, costs $26/m and is billed annually at $312. It further enhances the professional plan by including abandoned cart emails, discounted shipping, and integrated customer reviews.

The largest plan, Premium, costs $72/m which is billed annually at $912. The largest benefit is that it reduces the payment processing fee from 2.9% to 2.6%. If you have a large order volume or value then this can make a big difference. Discounts on shipping rates and real-time shipping calculations are also included.

Features & Functionality
General Features

Square online is built on top of Weebly so it has all the features you’d expect from a mature website builder. An interesting approach is that it includes features specific to certain kinds of businesses such as restaurants, retail stores, nonprofits, and more.

Social Selling

Selling to modern consumers requires a seamless experience across your website, social media platforms, and other marketplaces. Square has direct integrations with some of the most popular ones such as Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram. The orders made automatically sync with your Square backend.

Inventory Syncing

Square Online shines in its ability to connect your online and offline operations with a single inventory management interface. You’ll always have accurate stock levels and can even set up smart reorder level alerts so you can keep up with demand at all times.

Discount Coupons

You’re able to manage all your discount coupons from within Square Online to drive new and repeat sales. The options include expiring coupons, coupons with a limit on the number of times they can be redeemed, or coupons tied to specific products.

Appointment Booking

From within Square, you’re able to set up a calendar and allow your visitors to book right from your website. It’ll send out automated SMS and email reminders, set up recurring appointments, and charge fees for cancellation.

Payment Options

Square is a payments solution itself so it seems to have chosen to forego most integrations with other payment tools. It supports Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal but all other payments will have to go through its infrastructure. Customers can request to have their card information keyed in and this is a different type of transaction in the eyes of Square and attracts different fees.

Product Listing & Inventory Management

The platform allows you to list an unlimited number of products whether you’re on the free plan or the premium plan. It supports multiple product variations, mobile product editing, and different types of images. For inventory management, you’re able to sync online and offline sales and download detailed inventory reports. Items can even be edited in bulk using spreadsheets. Smart stock alerts and multiple product categories come standard.

Every eCommerce store that uses Square Online has a secure SSL certificate attached to it. Square Online is PCI DSS certified all the way to level one. The credit card numbers of your customers and other sensitive payment information aren’t stored in a place you can access them. That’s taken care of by Square. Extra security measures are taken within the company. The private information of its customers and your customers is only shared with the people that must know it. Two-factor authentication is enforced for administrative system access.

Square Online has a surprisingly small collection of templates. Even though they’re high-quality, it would be nice to see more. The templates are divided based on categories such as retail, restaurant, nonprofits, and a few miscellaneous templates that don’t fit well into a specific category. It’s important to note that the templates are designed around specific business types and come with features to support them. For example, restaurant templates have features that would be incompatible with a nonprofit brand. It doesn’t have the most flexibility but it will allow you to build good-looking websites.
