Company Background

Payment Depot was founded in 2013 by Danny Choi, the current president of the company. It has its headquarter in California and is an ISO registered with Wells Fargo Bank. Payment Depot was one of the first merchant service providers to introduce a subscription-based pricing system for merchant services. Today, the company serves thousands of businesses in the retail, B2B, food, accounting, and eCommerce industry. They currently boast of an average of $4 billion in transactions (in the U.S. alone, of course) every year.

Interestingly, Payment Depot provides merchant services to its users via three basic plans: Starter Membership, Most Popular Membership, and Enterprise Membership. There are also custom plans you can negotiate and opt for when you contact a sales representative.

Starter Membership Plan

This membership plan is best suited for small and medium scale businesses that run monthly transactions of $50,000 and below. It comes at a monthly fee of $79 and a per-transaction rate of $0.15 + interchange and 0 percentage markup.
At the time of this review, the hardware that accompanies this plan at no extra cost was not explicitly included on Payment Depot’s website. However, users of this plan should have access to a payment gateway (Authorize.net) on their eCommerce websites. Kindly call a sales representative to confirm the hardware your business is entitled to for using this plan.

Most Popular Membership Plan

If you run a mid-sized to large business with multiple channels, then the Most Popular Membership Plans may be right for you. It goes for a monthly fee of $99 and a per-transaction rate of $0.10 + interchange + 0 percentage markup.
While you cannot process transaction volumes beyond $150,000 every month, this plan offers you protection from any form of data breach. Also, you need to reach out to the company’s contact person to know which hardware you stand to receive (either free or at specified costs) with this plan.

Enterprise Membership Plan

While Enterprise Membership is the most expensive membership plan on Payment Depot, it comes with the cheapest processing rates and a maximum monthly volume of $300,000. At $199 per month, you’re charged $0.07 + interchange + 0 percentage markup when you subscribe to this plan.
Also, in addition to the data protection offered in the Most Popular Membership Plan, you’re assigned an account manager from Payment Depot. Consequently, you’ll no longer be bound by timing when your system needs troubleshooting or urgent technical support.

Custom Plans

If any of the membership plans outlined above does not cut it for your business, you can reach out to Payment Depot’s sales agents. They can customize a plan to meet your needs.

Other Transactions

Unlike most other merchant service providing companies that charge using percentage markups, Payment Depot does not charge customers for a host of services. These services include set up and account approval, account statement generation, and early termination (except you terminate after a new month’s subscription has been deducted). You will also not be charged for PCI compliance and IRS reporting.

However, Payment Depot will charge you extra fees on the following conditions:

Returning equipment after 90 days: 20% restocking fee

Chargeback fee:$15

PCI non-compliance:$19.99

Hardware & Software

Final Word

Payment Depot may not be the cheapest merchant service provider for small and infrequent businesses. Still, its transparency tops the bar among most providers. You know precisely what you are charged for, and peradventure you choose not to continue with them or your current plan, you can opt-out at the cost of nothing. Let’s not forget that their zero-percentage markup makes the bargain even sweeter – if you frequently transact every month. The user-friendliness and vast integrations available on Payment Depot make it ideal for small businesses and startups. And while they turn away from high-risk companies like airlines and adult product merchants, their customer services will make any small and mid-sized business owner stick with them.
