The business phone system that Vonage offers comes in three plans: Mobile, Premium, and Advanced. All plans have unlimited calls within the US, Canada, and Mexico, unlimited texts within the US and Canada, and unlimited team messaging. All plans also include access to the Vonage App Center with over twenty native integrations with third-party software and applications.

It is possible to subscribe to one of the lower-priced plans and to purchase individually any additional features you may need. This allows you more flexibility to configure the setup you need while maintaining a lower cost.

Vonage has an interesting pricing policy that many will find attractive. Prices are given per month per user, but on the website, you are presented with a slider that can be adjusted to indicate the number of users you want to pay for. As the slider is increased, the prices decrease by two dollars per month per user at five users and above and by five dollars per month per user at 20 users and above. For 100 users or more, the website states that you should contact a sales representative, indicating that even lower prices can be achieved.

The prices shown below are those for one to four users and do not include taxes or fees. Taxes depend on the location of the customer, while fees typically include activation fees, shipping fees, and early termination fees, among others, but maybe waived as part of an offer. Additional discounts for annual billing do not seem to be available.

Features & Functionality
General Features

Vonage emphasizes on its website that it has three primary focuses as far as the services it provides. These are unified communication systems, which is its primary business communication system, a full contact center feature set, as well as Vonage’s outstanding communications application programming interface (API) environment where highly customizable solutions can be developed and deployed. This is a very complete set of options for small businesses as well as enterprises with over 1,000 employees.

Other than the most popular telephony features, Vonage delivers:

  • Collaboration and productivity tools including call announce (so you know as much as possible about who is calling), call and paging groups, call monitoring, and team messaging.
  • Vonage meetings, an intuitive video collaboration solution that is made available across your organization.
  • An easy-to-use and intuitive user portal that allows individual phone users to configure and manage their extensions themselves.
  • Virtual receptionist enables you to customize your call routing for exceptional customer service.
  • Vonage meetings, an On Net Conference Suite, is a virtual destination where up to 15 people can call in for a group conversation.
  • A full call center suite with robust phone menu IVRs and advanced call handling algorithms ideal for small businesses and also highly scalable to accommodate larger enterprises.

Communication APIs

On its website, a service that is very prominently displayed is the Communications APIs service, and this prominence reflects the importance that Vonage places on this offering. The service was introduced when Vonage acquired both Nexmo and TokBox, two complementary API development platforms that focused on communications APIs and video APIs respectively. According to Vonage, the developers’ community is alive and vibrant with over 940,000 registered developers. The result is a platform on which customized communication and video APIs can be designed, developed, and deployed to function with your communication system.

An application programming interface is a software intermediary that allows two applications to communicate. It is essentially a piece of software that translates the language one application speaks to that of another. In this context, this service enables Vonage unified communications and call center services to achieve deep integration with third-party business software applications including helpdesk, CRM, and collaboration platforms, delivering information from these platforms to agents and users of the service.

Ease of Use

Vonage states on its website that “Switching is a cinch, and using it is even easier.” Those words truly embody the essence of what it is like to use the service. The business application dashboard is simple, clearly laid out, and easy to navigate. Users have consistently reported that the apps and features are easy to use, allowing customers to have more time doing what they are good at, namely their jobs, rather than spending time learning new software systems and dealing with ICT problems.

Customer Support

Vonage has a dedicated support portal for all of its services, including a detailed knowledge base for its communication and video API services. An online ticket submission and tracking system is available for contact center customers, and there is a separate dedicated portal for all unified communication customers.
Communication can take place via chat, by opening a case online, by participating in the community forum, or by phone.

Final Word

Vonage is a service that is trusted by over 100,000 businesses, many of which are known worldwide, lending credence to its reputation. By far the most impressive feature of the service is the level of flexibility the communication and video API service delivers to its robust unified communication and call center services. As a service, it is adaptable enough to be suitable for businesses ranging from the smallest to those with well over 1,000 employees.
