Plans & Pricing

Jimdo has 2 categories of pricing. The first is entirely focused on building a simple website. The second is more inclined toward e-commerce functionalities. For the purpose of this review, we will focus on the website category of Jimdo pricing plans.

Firstly, Jimdo has a Free Plan that costs absolutely nothing to use. However, there are limitations to the Free Plan, some of which include the complete lack of real-time customer support, as well as the ability to connect your email address and a custom domain.

Looking past the Free Plan, Jimdo offers really affordable packages that even startups and budding professionals can comfortably pay for. The table below highlights the available plans, their prices, and the main features offered on each plan.

Performance

For good reasons, website performance is an important factor to consider when choosing the website builder for your business. Some of the reasons to consider website performance as a criteria revolves around your website’s conversion rate, engagement, and visibility.

After publishing my Jimdo-powered website, I took it through a performance test using Google’s PageSpeed Insights. The results are a shy off impressive with a 6% overall performance score as you can clearly see in the image below.

Jimdo performance results

Site and Page Speed

One of the metrics that affects a website’s performance is the load speed. According to research by Google, every website should try to maintain a load time below 5 seconds. However, my website showed a load speed slower than Google’s benchmark with an index of 6 seconds. Also, it took the website 11.6 seconds to allow visitors’ interaction. That more than twice slower than the optimal load speed.

Accessibility

How easy is it for visitors to access your website? Several factors could affect the accessibility of your website including host uptime and browser compatibility. From our test, Jimdo powered websites have an 87% accessibility score. This isn’t the worst that I’ve seen but it’s a distance away from the best.

SEO and Best Practices

Websites can be built however the developer deems fit but there are qualities shared by the best-performing websites. Both the technical SEO qualities and the dev practices play an important role in putting your website on the league of best performers. According to my test results, Jimdo could use some more work on the accessibility and technical SEO of their builder to ensure that websites get the best exposure possible.

Uniqueness

Jimdo website builder stands out for its simplicity and inclination toward strong web design ethics. It is one of the very few no-code web builders helping self-employed professionals build an online presence for themselves and their business. It augments this effort by allowing simple, 3-click integration of third-party apps that users would need most.

Ease of Use

No doubt, Jimdo is a very intuitive website builder with a bunch of interactive processes. However, the builder has some quirks that may be a complete turn off for users. I have focused my use experience on three aspects of the tool: the setup, designing, and app integration.

Setup

I’ve had to setup website builders in the past –over two dozen of them– but none had a process as long and interactive as Jimdo. This website builder has a 14-step setup process that you need to go through before you are fully set to start using the website editor.

Although you can skip the steps, the entire setup process is designed to help the app integrate the website features that your business would need to get started. Here’s a video of me setting up the builder immediately after signing up.

Designing

Once I was fully setup and chosen a website theme, I had to jump right into designing the elements of my website. However, there is a bittersweet limitation to the design capabilities offered by Jimdo. It has a universal design setup.

Jimdo universal website design

This is as much a good thing as it is unpleasant. The good part is that it ensures consistency across the entire website. And the unpleasant part is that it limits your ability to customize individual elements.

Text Styling

Styling a text on Jimdo is as simple as it gets. Although you can directly change the color and font style of individual sentences and text box, you can work on the weight, orientation, and header levels. The video below shows how working with texts looks like.

Form Customization

This use case is completely out of question. Yes, Jimdo has prebuilt contact forms that you can add to your website, but they are more or less the same with differences in color. Sadly, you have to make do of the fields already built into the form. You can’t add or remove fields like in other builders. This is grossly inconvenient given that the only forms on the builder are contact forms.

Button Designing

A little better than the form customization option, buttons can take one of three shapes: sharp cornered, rounded, or oval-shaped. Customized sizes are not a given. Colors are dependent on the website’s universal color palette. However, you can set the destination URL of each button click.

App Integration

Integrating a third-party app into your Jimdo website is pretty straightforward. It does allow some level of freedom, no doubt. Nevertheless, there is a limited number of available third-party apps. As at the time of this writing, there were 25 SmartApps that you can integrate your website with. Although very limited, adding them to the website is easy as shown in the video below.

Customer Support

Although Jimdo is a great company with a track record of winning awards, it doesn’t offer much in terms of customer support. However, it has the regular self-service materials that its competitors have. Focusing on human-to-human support, Jimdo could do better in that area. My personal experience below tells a lot more.

Email and Ticketing Support

First of all, Jimdo offers no email support to non-paying customers. And, depending on the pricing plan you bought, response time can go as long as 2 working days. So, it might not be a good idea to shoot them an email or submit a support ticket on a Friday. Except it’s not urgent.

I did try the ticketing system out, nonetheless, and they stayed true to their promise. Since I was using the Start plan, I got their response on the second day. The support rep’s response, however, was comprehensive. The recommendations given were easy to follow and effective.

Live Chat

Contrary to the ticketing system, the live chat option is much faster and the reps are more responsive with this. When I requested to chat wth a support expert live, I got connected with Alex in a few minutes. [Don’t know if Alex is a he or she, but let’s use “she” for the time being]. Her responses to my messages were articulate and respectful. And she also offered help beyond what was expected.

It’s crucial for me to inform you, also, that this support option isn’t available around the clock. You can only jump on a live chat with a support personnel during work hours on weekdays.

As weird as the name may sound, this feature is exactly what the name implies. Based on your business type, Jimdo creates an SEO checklist with step-by-step guides on how to complete each part of the checklist. Completing this SEO checklist will automatically put your business in the good graces of search engines. However, this does not substitute for always implementing on-page SEO best practices.

Verdict

Yes, Jimdo is very intuitive and simple. However, there is a lot that can be done to transform it into an industry-leading website builder. For instance, the creative freedom that it offers its users can be better. Also, the company can work on improving the performance of its websites.

Regardless of these shortcomings though, Jimdo is a very affordable option for businesses just starting out and self-employed professionals looking to save cost. I’m confident that its one of the reasons that it acquired millions of users in the first place.

So, if you’re a freelancer, independent professional, or early-stage startup looking for to develop a simple website that can give your business the online presence that it needs, as well as e-commerce functionalities, you should consider the Jimbo website builder. I’m keeping faith that the company will improve the product as time goes by. However, if you do need to scale before significant improvements are made, no one will fault you for seeking alternatives.
