Scribbr claims that it uses the largest database in the globe, comprised of 99.3 billion web pages, 8 million publications, and over 20 languages. Though it may appear that Scribbr’s plagiarism checker is powerful, I was not impressed with the experience.

I tested the free tool on two articles lifted from online blogs, and the results were varied and quite lacking.

First, I checked the plagiarism of a recent blog of less than 1,000 words. After around 30 seconds, Scribbr revealed that the article, which I directly copied from its source, has a low risk of plagiarism. Similarity percentage was only available on Premium.

Afterwards, I tested another recent blog with twice the number of words. After a minute, it showed me that the article had a moderate risk of plagiarism. It listed the top three websites to which the article was most similar to, but interestingly, it did not show the blog where it was directly lifted from. Additionally, the free version did not reveal the complete URL and blurred the portion with text similarity.

Scribbr Performance results

The speed of the plagiarism report is fair considering my poor internet speed at the time at only 5 Mbps, although there are other plagiarism checkers that are faster. The checker does deliver on its promise to finish its analysis in under 10 minutes, though it can be shorter depending on the length of the text.

To compare, Grammarly can easily detect the same two articles to be 100% plagiarized in less than 15 seconds.

This leads to concern regarding Scribbr’s accuracy. It appears the length of the articles affects the result, as well as how recently it has been published.

Ease of Use

The user interface of Scribbr is straightforward, so you don’t need to be a tech expert to use it. Here, I will show you how to simply check your document for plagiarism with Scribbr.

First, go to the homepage and select the “Plagiarism Checker” section. Then, upload your document by clicking on the “Upload your document” button.

Scribbr ease of use for uploading documents

Once your document is uploaded, the plagiarism checker will analyze your text and compare it to billions of web pages and documents.
After completing the analysis, you will see the results of the plagiarism report, including the percentage of similarity to other sources and a list of matching passages.

Scribbr ease of use of identifying sources

It would be easy to use Scribbr daily, especially if you primarily work with MS Word or PDF files. However, the free trial is very limited, with only a generic description of the level of plagiarism.

Scribbr’s plagiarism report is similar to other plagiarism checkers I have tested. It displays the basic information you need, including the percent similarity and URLs of similar content online. However, it sets itself apart by giving the user the flexibility to search either internet or publication repositories and excluding certain types of text, like quotes and bibliographies.

The tool is best for students and teachers, especially considering its repository for academic publications and citation tools. However, after testing its performance on online blogs, it may not be a good fit for online content creators.
