Gusto Payroll Services's Offerings

I tested Gusto as a small business owner. Here is an honest, detailed look at what it does, what it costs, and why it stands out as the best value platform for small and micro businesses today.

How much is Gusto Payroll? Gusto Payroll Software offers a range of plans and pricing tailored to businesses of all sizes. Whether you’re a small business looking for basic payroll features or a growing company requiring advanced HR tools, Gusto payroll provides flexible options to streamline payroll, benefits, and workforce management.

Why $49/mo is an outstanding deal for small businesses

Let me be direct: $49/mo + $6 per person is one of the lowest entry prices in the market for what Gusto actually delivers. This is not a basic payroll tool with a few add-ons. It is a fully integrated business operations platform.
Value banner: $49/mo + $6/person → Full payroll · Automated tax filing · W-2 & 1099 forms · Employee onboarding · Benefits administration · Self-service portal · Reporting · Integrations — all in one platform.

What would this cost you otherwise?

What you need DIY / separate tool cost Gusto Simple covers it?
Payroll processing $50–$150/mo for basic payroll-only tools ✓ Included
Tax filing (federal, state, local) $200–$600/year with an accountant ✓ Included
W-2 and 1099 forms Extra fee on most platforms ✓ Free on all plans
Employee onboarding portal $20–$80/mo for a standalone HR tool ✓ Included
Benefits administration Requires a broker or separate platform ✓ Included
Employee self-service (pay stubs, time off) Usually a premium add-on elsewhere ✓ Included
Direct deposit Often charged per transaction ✓ Included

My honest take – tested as a small business owner

I tested Gusto by going through the full setup as a small business owner, running payroll, onboarding employees, setting up benefits, and navigating the tax filing process from scratch. What struck me most was how much the platform removes from your plate. Before testing Gusto, I was tracking what a typical small business owner deals with: calculating wages, chasing tax deadlines, managing benefits through separate providers, and manually distributing pay stubs. Gusto replaced all of that with a single platform that genuinely just works.

What surprised me most was how much you get for the price. At $49/mo + $6 per person, you are not just getting a payroll tool; you are getting payroll, HR, benefits administration, onboarding, tax filing, and a self-service portal for your employees, all in one place. For a small or micro business, that is genuinely exceptional value. It would cost significantly more to stitch together those capabilities from separate tools, let alone pay a specialist to handle them manually.

The interface is clean, fast, and actually enjoyable to use. Running payroll takes a few minutes. Taxes are filed automatically. New employees onboard themselves. Your team can check their pay stubs, request time off, and update their own details without ever needing to ask you. That is time back in your week – every week.

The bottom line: For a 5-person business, Gusto Simple costs $49 + (5 × $6) = $79/month — that is $948/year to have payroll, taxes, onboarding, benefits, and HR all handled automatically. Businesses that switch to Gusto report saving an average of $1,800/year and roughly 100 hours in compliance and admin tasks.¹

Customer Support

Gusto has phone, chat, and messaging support for non-users, and dedicated support for users within the portal. Their business hours are 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM MST Monday – Friday.

There’s also no shortage of support resources available for business owners at all stages. Their online Help Center is divided into topic categories with search options. Under Resources, you can find the Gusto blog, tax calculators, small business guides, and accountant resources.

Gusto also has a dedicated YouTube Channel.

Gusto Feature Focus
Gusto also Launched Gusto Feature Focus, a dynamic new hub where customers and partners can easily access the latest product updates and improvements. I found this really impressive because it means you can check in every month, and always know how to best use the software and leverage the available features for your business.

Gusto Feature Focus

When I explored Gusto’s customer support, I tried out the multiple channels that are available to assist users:

Email Support
For less urgent matters, Gusto provides email support. However, it took me a day to get a response.

Community Forums and Blogs
Gusto maintains a blog and community forums where users can find updates, best practices, and discussions on payroll and HR topics. These platforms offer additional support and insights from both Gusto experts and fellow users.

Online Chatbot
I tried out the live chat feature, which is available during the same hours as phone support.
It is quick to respond and knowledgeable but can only connect with a live agent during business hours.

Updated Gusto Chatbot

Contact Submission
The Help Center receives messages via a contact submission form. I sent a short request and received a generic reply within 12 hours. Gusto’s Help Center is a comprehensive resource with articles and guides covering various topics, including payroll processing, benefits, and compliance. When I navigated through the FAQs, I found them detailed and helpful for troubleshooting common issues.

Gusto Contact Submission Reply

Live Phone Conversation
Although only available during business hours, my phone call was answered on the 3rd ring and the agent was knowledgeable regarding my request for overseas/global payroll processing. There were upsell attempts, but that was to be expected.

  • Federal, state, and local tax withheld per employee per run
  • Quarterly and annual filings submitted automatically
  • W-2s and 1099s generated and filed at no extra charge
  • Compliance deadlines tracked in the background

New hire reporting — done the moment you hire

Integrations

Gusto also integrates with almost 200 outside apps and platforms to help run your business. This includes project management tools like Asana, Trello, and more.

Connect to your existing tools

Simple plan includes integrations with accounting software, time tracking tools, and expense apps — payroll data flows automatically to where it needs to go.

  2. TSheets, Homebase, Deputy — import hours directly to payroll
  3. Expensify, Receipt Bank — expense sync
  4. Slack — payday notifications for your team

Value: No manual data re-entry between tools

Total integrations: Nearly 200 third-party apps and tools supported across all major business software categories.

Real impact for a micro business owner: Before Gusto, running payroll for a 5-person team typically meant calculating wages manually, entering figures into accounting software, managing tax deadlines separately, emailing pay stubs, and chasing employees for onboarding forms. Gusto removes every single one of those steps. You approve payroll. Gusto handles the rest.

Performance:

When I evaluated Gusto’s performance, I focused on its speed, reliability, and feature set to determine its effectiveness as a comprehensive online payment processing service.

Speed and reliability
The web app is consistently fast. Payroll reports with a full year of data load in seconds. Cloud-based with no manual updates or maintenance. No crashes or data errors were encountered during testing.

Feature Set
Gusto provides a robust array of features beyond basic payroll processing. These include automated tax filings, benefits administration, time tracking, and compliance support. The platform also offers an employee self-service portal, enabling staff to access pay stubs, tax documents, and personal information, which enhances the overall user experience.

Mobile experience
The Gusto Wallet Android app for employees is excellent — pay stubs, time tracking, time-off requests, early pay access, and Visa Debit Card all in one place. For administrators, running full payroll requires a desktop browser. There is no dedicated iPhone, iPad, or admin mobile app. This is the platform’s main practical limitation for mobile-first business owners.

Ease Of Use:

Creating an account was easy and took me less than 5 minutes. I needed my business and tax information handy, and there is a 1-2 business day verification period before being allowed to run the first payroll. I was approved to run payroll within 4 hours of initial setup.

When I navigated Gusto’s platform, I found the dashboard clean and easy to use. Payroll, benefits, and HR features are neatly organized, making it simple to access everything without unnecessary clicks.

Simple Setup Process
Setting up Gusto was straightforward. A step-by-step onboarding wizard guided me through tax details, employee data, and online payment processing services setup. Even for those without payroll experience, the process is seamless and ensures compliance with tax regulations.

Efficient and Time-Saving
With Gusto, payroll takes just a few clicks. Its automation features streamline electronic check processing and payroll taxes, making it one of the most efficient online payment platforms for businesses.

Employee Self-Service Portal
Employees can log in to access pay stubs, tax forms, and benefits without needing HR assistance. This reduces administrative work and enhances the overall e-commerce payment experience.

In this video, you can see how to create an employee/contractor account and it will walk through the steps for running payroll:

Uniqueness:

What is Gusto and is it worth it?

Gusto is a cloud-based payroll, HR, and benefits platform built specifically for small and medium-sized businesses. Founded in 2011 in San Francisco as ZenPayroll, it now serves over 400,000 businesses with a mission to make payroll, taxes, and HR feel human and simple — and from hands-on testing, it delivers on that mission.

Gusto is the right starting point for any small or micro business that wants to manage payroll, taxes, benefits, and HR without hiring a specialist or juggling multiple tools. The Simple plan at $49/mo + $6 per person is genuinely affordable — and it includes capabilities that would cost far more elsewhere. Unlimited payroll runs, automated tax filing (including W-2s and 1099s), employee onboarding, benefits administration, and a full self-service portal are all included from day one.

Verdict:

Gusto is feature-heavy and an excellent cloud-based solution for managing your business’s payroll, taxes, and benefits. It is aimed at businesses of all sizes and stages and has pricing tiers based on the number of employees. While it may be pricier than some other options, Gusto’s automation, benefits management, and compliance support makes it a solid investment for businesses looking to streamline their HR processes.

Gusto is really good
A simple and easy to use program. The payroll was simple, automated and easy to manage for special situations, such as overtime, free time, or bonuses that were not available to everyone. With the checklist for setting up accounts, it is very easy to get started. The control panel tells you what needs to be done.
Dislike:
  • customer service was terrible, needs to be improved.

Robust platform
Gusto is a pretty robust payroll provider, especially for small businesses. I like that instructions make it super easy to onboard and do payroll. In other software companies, I have been unable to reach people with emails or onboarding. It's also nice to have an offer letter.

I love how easy it is to use
I love how modern Gusto is – the pricing is the best I've found. Other payroll services were cryptic and dinosaur models that billed per payroll cycle and per person. I've got a super small company and would have paid hundreds a month for what I get for a fraction of the price with Gusto! Their support has been amazing! I don't know anything about the taxes/percentages/etc. I spend less time on payroll and more time on my business.

Gusto makes my life easy
Payroll is easy to set up and run. I don't have to spend a lot of time figuring things out - everything just works. In addition, I've found the support to be responsive and knowledgeable when I have questions. The Gusto service also allows me to have multiple logins, which is really convenient when I'm using a bookkeeping service. In addition, the service is very affordable.
