Performance is an important factor to consider, especially for an ecommerce website. While BigCommerce provide industry-standard ecommerce solutions, its website builder haven’t proven to be the best-performing option in the market. After publishing my website, I ran a performance test and obtained the following result.

Let me break them down for a moment.

Site and Page Speed

With a performance score of just 16%, the BigCommerce website builder ranks as one of the poorest website builders by performance. According to the report from the above Google PageSpeed Insights, visitors have to wait a whopping 22.9 seconds before they can interact with the website. Also, a 12.2-second speed index is more than twice longer than the Google-recommended threshold of 5 seconds.


This metric is a big deal because it basically reveals how easy it is for visitors to locate the elements of your website. It shows how easy it is to find buttons, texts, and web pages. Also, it’s an indicator of your website’s uptime. Given that BigCommerce promises over 99.9% uptime, you can be confident that everything will run just fine for you. My website’s accessibility score was 81% which is a very good thing compared to the overall performance index.

Best Practices and SEO

This part of the performance test is mainly focused on the website’s framework and search engine worthiness. From the look of things, the BigCommerce website builder is a good framework for developing a website since it scores an excellent 92% on best practices. With search engines, also, BigCommerce is decently graced with an 83% score.

Ease of Use

BigCommerce does have a lot to offer as regards online selling. However, using the website builder is just shy of taking a rocket science test from MIT. It’s insanely difficult to navigate. With the limited widgets on the website editor, you can barely do much. With a closer focus on a few use cases, including setup and designing a website, my experiences are highlighted below.


Setting up the BigCommerce website editor isn’t any different from setting up a regular account on the ecommerce platform. Of course, there’s a few questions to answer. Given that the pricing structure of BigCommerce is contingent on your company’s revenue, the platform forces you to disclose your estimated annual revenue during the setup stage.

Right after creating your account, your adventure with the website builder begins with you choosing one of the many themes available on the Theme Marketplace. Only a few of those are free though. Once you have a theme to work with, you can move right into designing your website.


Designing on the BigCommerce website builder could be a lot better. I trust that they are working on improvements because what they have at this time is 12 miles from intuitive and user-friendly.

If you choose to customize a theme, you might not be able to edit some pre-defined elements from the WYSIWYG website editor. Here’s what I’m talking about.

Instead, you need to use a separate editor (Home Page Carousel) to make changes to your website header. Jumping between sections just to edit the same web page is weirdly inconvenient.

In the designing department also, you can make website-wide changes directly from the Theme Styles window. This way, you can ensure uniformity across website. Here’s what the website styling feature feels like.

But you can gain a more element-specific control of how your website look.

Text Styling

Working with texts on the BigCommerce Storefront editor is just simple and basic. No fancy stuff. You can add text into your website by dragging the “Text” widget into the website. manipulating the fonts size, weight, and color are done using the functions on the left side pane of the editor as shown in the video below.

Form customization

There’s no widget for forms on the Storefront editor. So, for users with zero technical experience, adding forms to a website could be an extremely difficult task. More technical users can work around the lack of forms widget by using the HTML code snippet to build a form with basic HTML5.

Button designing

Buttons, albeit have to be globally uniform on a website, should be aesthetically pleasing. Designing buttons when working on BigCommerce Storefront is pretty straightforward.

After adding the button to the web page, you can begin tweaking it’s outlook right on the left pane of the editor as shown in the image below. Basically, you have control over every attribute of the button, including color, curvature, border, text, etc.

App Integration

With more than 100,000 local and third-party apps on the BigCommerce App Store, you can supposedly transform your website into a powerful center of commerce. It turns out, however, that integrating these apps into the website directly from the App Store isn’t as simple as most website builders had made theirs. Personally, I find the App Store better suited for the ecommerce payment processing functions of BigCommerce.

Customer Support

BigCommerce has one of the most sophisticated self-service resources in the e-commerce and web builders space. Not to exaggerate things, you could know as much as a business consultant by mere reading from the consistently updated BigCommerce blog.
One of the outstanding self-service options is the BigCommerce University. It is a repertoire of courses and certifications that you need to become a professional ecommerce manager and developer.

Other resources include guides and tutorials, webinars, articles, and more. Beyond these amazing self-service support provisions, BigCommerce allows users to connect with real support agents through three channels: phone, email, and live chat. My experience using these channels are highlighted below.

Live Chat

Starting a live chat with BigCommerce is not as straightforward as expected. You have to be a signed-in paid user to connect with a real support expert. And they enforce this by requesting for your support PIN as a requisite for initiating a starting a live chat.

With your support PIN in hand, chatting with support is a smooth experience. After starting the chat, I was connected to the technical team in a minute. Their responses were professional and helpful. They even offered to jump in from the back end to help me fix the challenges I was facing.

Email Support

The email support is tightly woven with the ticketing system. By sending an email to the BigCommerce team, you instantly open a ticket that you can easily track on the Contact page.

When I sent an email to the support team, I received a response instantly notifying me that a ticket had been opened to address my concerns. Another more actionable response was delivered in about 3 hours time.

Phone Support

Depending on your purpose of calling, as well as where you’re reaching out from, BigCommerce has a lot of phone lines. You can reach any of them to talk about sales, payments, and even the technicalities of the website builder.

Contacting them was seamless, although I had to wait in line for about 3 minutes. The expert that joined the call on the other end was eloquent and professional. He had very good knowledge of the website builder and the entire BigCommerce solutions. And his guidance was one of the best.

There are few brands that have defined the global outlook of digital businesses and BigCommerce is certainly one of them. As more brands emerge to help small business owners with no technical background save the huge cost of hiring devs and designers, BigCommerce has positioned itself to compete. However, an intuitive website builder is obviously not their strongest suit. At least not at this time.

Keep in mind, though, that the tool may present some difficulties that will require a little technical know-how.

Works well if you have a large inventory

It works

We use a new ERP system and Shopify wouldn’t work with it so we switched to Bigcommerce. It is adequate for now but I hope they keep adding features


It was easy to set up relatively large websites


The order management system doesn’t allow you to edit past orders. You can add products to an order but you can’t charge customers the balance
