However, users can pay an upfront sum of $799 and subsequently $69 per month with a 2.49% + $0.15 processing fee per transaction to cover the cost of the starter kit. The users of this plan can conveniently manage their orders, menus, and tables. There is also reporting round-the-clock customer support and real-time transaction monitoring against fraud. Users also benefit from technical support during upgrades and installation. However, features like online ordering, email marketing, gift cards, and loyalty programs can only be accessed as add-ons and at additional costs.

Essentials

The Essential plan is ideal for existing businesses that intend to experience POS the Toast way. It goes for a monthly fee of $165 and includes 3 free months of Toast’s online ordering feature (originally at $75 per month). In addition to the features of the Starter plan, users of this plan get access to an efficient delivery service and the Toast Takeout app for a more convenient customer experience.

Custom

The Toast Custom plan is designed for restaurant owners looking to scale their profit and improve their customers’ experience. As its name implies, the cost of using this plan is customized according to individual business needs. You’ll need to reach out to the company’s support team to get a quote. This plan is also cloud-based and offers the entire features of the Essentials plan.

However, with this plan, users can access features like digital ordering, takeout, and delivery as paid add-ons. In addition, email marketing, gift cards, and loyalty programs are also charged at additional prices. This plan also features many employee and customer management tools as add-ons. These tools include scheduling, payroll, business insurance, tips, a PayCard, 401k, and API.

The New Restaurant Basics

At $110 + $4 per employee per month, the Toast New Restaurant Basics plan is suited for businesses looking to have POS and payroll in one package. In addition to the features in the Starter plan, this plan covers the lite versions of employee scheduling, payroll, and team management. It also covers business insurance, 401k, tips, and the Toast PayCard.

Ease of Use

Toast’s basic features are easy to understand and can be taught to staff quickly. The company will assist you with the setup process. According to most users, their customer service is thorough and friendly.

It may take you and your staff some time playing around to thoroughly understand Toast’s back-end features. It does not offer the most modern design or interfaces but isn’t too difficult to learn either.

Toast offers more comprehensive customer support than most of its competition.

General Features
Menu Customization

Toast menus will match the physical menus you use and allow you to organize them the same way. Beyond breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you can also further break down menu item groups. There is plenty of room for more subgroups and modifiers.

Restaurant-Tailored Reporting & Inventory Management

Most point-of-sale systems offer reports on transactions. Toast goes one step further for restaurant owners.

Toast integrates its customer relationship system with reports. You can collect customer information and see which customers visit your restaurant the most. Customer reports can be broken down by average check, frequency of visits, and most frequently ordered dishes.

On the inventory side, you can monitor costs with a recipe costing tool and food cost calculator. More impressively, Toast offers a menu engineering feature that helps you determine the best-selling and most profitable dishes.

Staff Management

User-based permissions and access allow you to delegate tasks appropriately. For example, you can only allow managers to approve voids and discounts.

Kitchen Display

Toast’s color-coded kitchen display system features wait times on all orders and enables them to quickly notify servers when an order is prepared. Servers can be notified with a flash or a sound through the POS system.

Toast Go

The Toast Go app makes tableside ordering simple and easy for your staff. With a handheld device, servers send information to the kitchen quickly. Customer-requested changes can be quickly communicated via a device that’s separate from the main POS register.

Verdict

Toast offers a comprehensive POS solution for small restaurants, cafes, and similar businesses. While it isn’t a solution for larger businesses, it offers small catering and takeout businesses all the support they need to compete locally. Amid the current pandemic, Toast has also tweaked its offer to include tableside ordering and other features to better accommodate social distancing.

Happy Customer

Toast is well built, and fit for the future. I'm very happy I found out about this software and started to implement it into my business's everyday.

Cons

There's isn't much I currently dislike about Toast. It's a newer company compared to others in the market. For that reason, they are still working out some glitches.

Great platform system!

My bar is more efficient after using Toast. Every feature is well thought out and can be used to elevate the workflow.

Pros

Can store credit card info. Overall, I no longer have to fret over transactions

Cons

customer service can be a hit or miss, but can use the Toast Central portal to troubleshoot. Also this isn't completely cloud-based. However, I still access the backend and tweak what is needed. Hasn't been super problematic for me personally

System has been going down a lot lately

Cloud based system has all the features you'd want but at a premium. Recently the system on their end has been going down a lot. Usually at peak hours when you need it the most. They say it works in offline mode but I don't find that to be true. Customer service beyond the basics is touch and miss. Been trying to get a refund on faulty equipment I got under warranty. Equipment was returned to them in December and after numerous calls and ZERO calls back I still haven't received my refund. It's been 3 months. They are quick to get their money but slow to give yours back. The concept is great service and execution can be lacking.
