HubSpot AEO review: What is it, what can it do, and is it worth $50?

HubSpot AEO is a $50/month tool that tracks how your brand shows up in AI answers and then tells you what content to create. It is useful for execution, but it does NOT show your real AI visibility – it only sees the prompts you load, so it can report 0% even when ChatGPT and Google already mention you. Treat it as a do-the-work tool, not a measure-the-work tool.

An honest, hands-on review based on a live walkthrough of every tab and setting in HubSpot AEO (Beta), tested on a real account (sonary.com), and compared directly to Semrush AI Visibility and Ahrefs Brand Radar.

What is HubSpot AEO?

HubSpot AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is an AI visibility tool that tracks whether AI search engines mention and cite your brand, and then generates a content and outreach plan to improve it. The important thing to understand up front is what kind of tool it is: a closed-loop prompt tracker plus a recommendation engine built into HubSpot. It is not an open-web discovery tool. It only analyzes the specific prompts you give it – it does not scan the wider web to find where your brand already appears.

The flow works in four steps:

  • You add prompts: the buying questions you think your customers ask AI tools.
  • It runs them: each prompt is sent ~10 times to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.
  • It analyzes the answers: logging which pages are cited, the content type and channel, and whether your brand is mentioned.
  • It recommends actions: a prioritized backlog of content, social, and outreach tasks, with in-tool draft generation.

HubSpot AEO is the answer engine companion to HubSpot’s core CRM; for the CRM itself, see our hands-on HubSpot CRM review.

Does HubSpot AEO show your real AI visibility?

No – and this is the single most important thing to understand before you rely on it. On the test account, HubSpot AEO reported the brand at 0% visibility, while Semrush and Ahrefs both showed real, healthy presence for the same domain. The setup was not the problem: the primary domain and brand-name variations were both configured correctly. The gap is purely about method:

  • HubSpot is closed-loop: it only checks the ~25 prompts in the account, which were generic awareness questions that almost never name a specific vendor. No mentions in those prompts means a 0% score – even for a brand that is genuinely visible elsewhere.
  • Semrush and Ahrefs are open-web: they scan a database of 90-239M real prompts and surface your domain wherever it actually appears – which is why they show real numbers (e.g. Semrush: visibility 14, 23 mentions, 1.5K cited pages) and HubSpot shows zero.
  • The sentiment score is an artifact: sentiment is calculated from brand mentions, so with zero mentions it sits at a meaningless, flat neutral and never populates.

Bottom line: as configured, HubSpot AEO does not give you – or your audience – the real answer about where you stand in AI search. Do not publish or report its visibility number until the prompt set is fixed, and even then, lead your AI-visibility reporting with open-web tools.

What can HubSpot AEO actually do? (capabilities)

Where the tool earns its keep is in execution. Its real, useful capabilities are:

  • Verbatim AI answers: the full text of what ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity say to each tracked prompt – excellent qualitative insight into how your category is described.
  • Citation mapping: the exact domains, pages, content formats, and channels (review sites, Reddit, YouTube, UGC) that AI engines cite for your prompts – a concrete map of what to target.
  • Competitor share of voice: how often a defined competitor set appears, per engine, for your prompts.
  • An execution plan: a prioritized, assignable backlog of content and outreach, with one-click draft generation, all inside HubSpot CMS and CRM.

What HubSpot AEO cannot do (limitations)

  • Discover your real footprint: it cannot find where your brand already appears across the open web – the single number you most want.
  • Find the right prompts for you: you must add prompts manually; it will not surface the real-world queries that already mention you.
  • Cover every engine: no Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, or Microsoft Copilot – only three engines.
  • Show history: runs are weekly, and changes apply going forward only, so there is no instant or backfilled view.
  • Replace SEO tools: no keyword volumes, backlinks, or SERP data.

Which AEO best practices does HubSpot AEO support? (checklist)

Appearing in AI search engines comes down to a known set of moves: answer-first content, question-based structure, schema, strong off-page citations, clean technical access for AI crawlers, and ongoing measurement. The table below maps each AEO best practice to whether HubSpot AEO actually supports it. Read Supported as: Yes = the platform does it for you, Partial = it helps but you need to finish the job elsewhere, No = you must do it in another tool.

AEO best practice Supported? What this means for you
On-page content optimization

Direct answer in the first ~50 words

No

An on-page tactic you apply in your CMS. The tool shows the AI answers, but it does not write or score your page copy.

Question-based headings (H2/H3)

No

You structure this in your content. Not implemented or checked by the tool.

FAQ section on your pages

Partial

It can recommend FAQ-style content to create, but cannot add FAQs or FAQ markup to your site.

Schema / structured data (FAQPage, Article, HowTo)

No

Not implemented or audited. Add it via your CMS or an SEO/technical tool.

E-E-A-T signals (author, credentials, sources)

No

On-page trust signals you add yourself; the tool does not handle them.

Internal linking/topic clusters

No

Not addressed. Manage in your CMS / SEO tool.

Keywords, entities, and queries

Keyword and entity research (with volumes)

No

No keyword data. Use Ahrefs or Semrush for volumes and entity research.

Prompt / question research (what people ask AI)

Partial

You add prompts manually; it will not discover the real-world prompts people use.

Winning content formats (comparison, listicle, how-to)

Yes

Citation-by-content-type shows which formats AI rewards, and recommendations specify the format to create.

Off-page and earned visibility

Get cited on review sites, Reddit, YouTube, and listicles

Yes

Flags the channels and domains that win citations and generates social + outreach tasks. You still execute them.

Digital PR / outreach to third-party pages

Yes

Generates targeted outreach recommendations (e.g. get listed in an authority comparison page).

Content creation/drafting

Yes

The Generate blog post action drafts content for a recommendation inside HubSpot.

Technical and maintenance

Allow AI crawlers (GPTBot etc.), robots.txt, llms.txt

No

Technical setup not covered. Handle at the server / SEO level.

Content freshness/update cadence

No

It will not update your pages. Its own data refreshes weekly.

Measurement and strategy

Track your TRUE AI visibility across the web

No

It only sees your tracked prompts, so it can report 0% when you are actually visible. Use Ahrefs / Semrush for this.

Track visibility for your tracked prompts over time

Yes

Within your prompt set, across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.

Competitor share of voice / benchmarking

Yes

Compares a defined competitor set per engine for your prompts.

Brand mention monitoring

Partial

Only within your tracked prompts and 3 engines – no open-web discovery.

Sentiment analysis

Partial

Only meaningful when mentions exist; otherwise, it sits at a flat, empty neutral.

Multi-engine coverage

Partial

ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity only. No Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, or Microsoft Copilot.

The pattern: HubSpot AEO supports the strategy-and-execution layer (which formats and channels win, what to create, who to reach out to) and partially supports measurement of your chosen prompts. It does NOT support on-page optimization (answer-first copy, headings, schema, E-E-A-T), technical setup (AI crawler access), or true open-web visibility. For those, you need your CMS plus an SEO/AEO tool like Ahrefs or Semrush.

Is HubSpot AEO worth $50 a month?

It depends entirely on the job you hire it for:

  • To measure your AI visibility: no. It cannot see your real footprint, so use Semrush or Ahrefs for measurement.
  • As a $50 execution add-on: reasonable, yes – if you already use HubSpot and someone will act on the recommendations, and only after you replace the generic prompts with branded and comparison prompts.
  • As a standalone tool for a micro business: no. It diagnoses but does not do the work, and as configured, the diagnosis is wrong anyway.

The honest one-liner: HubSpot AEO is a capable do-the-work tool wearing the costume of a measure-the-work tool. Used for execution alongside a real measurement tool, $50/month is fair. Used alone as your source of truth, it will mislead you.

How to get real value from HubSpot AEO

Used correctly, it is the execution half of a two-tool stack. The flow that delivers real value:

  1. Measure elsewhere: Use Ahrefs or Semrush to find the real prompts and keywords where your brand already appears, and to benchmark your true AI visibility over time. Compare the best options in the SEO tools category.
  2. Fix the prompt set: Delete the generic awareness prompts and add branded, comparison, and bottom-funnel prompts where your brand can realistically be cited (e.g., best software comparison sites, Sonary vs Capterra, alternatives to G2).
  3. Optimize the pages yourself: In your CMS, apply the on-page moves the tool cannot (answer in the first 50 words, question headings, FAQ sections, schema markup, author/E-E-A-T signals, internal links).
  4. Read the answers: Use the verbatim AI responses and citation maps to see exactly which pages out-rank you and why.
  5. Execute the backlog: Use the recommendations and draft generation to produce the owned content and outreach that target those winning pages, then publish through HubSpot.
  6. Set expectations: Remember, data only refreshes weekly and forward-only, and correct the brand display name if it is wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is HubSpot AEO in simple terms?

HubSpot AEO is a $50/month tool that tracks how your brand appears in AI answers for the prompts you give it, and then generates a content and outreach plan to improve that. It is an execution tool built into HubSpot, not an open-web AI-visibility scanner.

Does HubSpot AEO show my real AI visibility?

No. It only measures the specific prompts you load, so it can report 0% even when AI engines already mention you. For your true AI visibility, use Semrush or Ahrefs, which scan the open web.

Does HubSpot AEO handle on-page AEO like schema, headings, and answer-first copy?

No. HubSpot AEO does not implement or audit on-page elements such as schema markup, question-based headings, FAQ sections, or answer-first paragraphs. Those you apply in your CMS. HubSpot AEO tells you what to create and where citations are won, not how to format the page.

Is HubSpot AEO worth it?

As an execution add-on for existing HubSpot users who will act on the recommendations, yes, once you load the right prompts. As a standalone measurement tool, no, it cannot see your real footprint.

How is it different from Semrush and Ahrefs?

Semrush and Ahrefs discover where you actually appear across millions of real prompts (measurement). HubSpot AEO only tracks your chosen prompts but tells you what content to create next (execution). They solve different halves of the AEO problem.

Which AI engines does HubSpot AEO track?

ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. It does not yet track Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, or Microsoft Copilot.
