The best Vonage alternative depends on how your business takes calls. Ooma Office is the closest swap for an office with desk phones and no contract, Google Voice is the cheapest for teams on Google Workspace, and Grasshopper suits a solo owner who lives on a cell phone. Most people look for alternatives to Vonage when they find out the low price comes with a 1-year contract. Our Vonage review covers each plan.

The apps like Vonage on this page are business phone systems. If you are replacing a Vonage home phone, jump to the home-phone section below.

What changed at Vonage?

  • 21 Jul 2022: Ericsson completed its purchase of Vonage. Ericsson has since written down about $4.1 billion of its value and named a new head of Vonage from 15 Aug 2026. Its focus is network APIs. There is no sign of a shutdown.
  • November 2022: the FTC ordered Vonage to pay $100 million over how it handled cancellations, including phone-only cancellation and fees customers did not see coming (FTC order).

Why do small businesses leave Vonage?

  • The low price is a contract. Mobile is $13.99 a user only on a 1-year term with a 30% discount. Month to month it is $19.99. Vonage says the early termination fee can range up to the total price of your contract.
  • Billing keeps running until you act. A small business owner said in September 2025 that after porting numbers away over outages, Vonage renewed the account into a new 1-year term and charged an early termination fee.
  • The cheap plan is not an office plan. Mobile has no desk phones, video or app integrations. Those start on Premium at $29.99 monthly. Call recording is Advanced only, capped at 15 hours a month.
  • Support. Sonary's review lists customer support as a weak point. A customer said in July 2026 that the bill rose from about $170 to $350 and moved the lines to Google Voice.

Stay on Vonage if

  • You are mid-contract. The fee can equal the rest of your term, so switch at the renewal date.
  • You are a 1-4 person team happy on Mobile at the annual price. Few alternatives beat $13.99.
  • You use Vonage's APIs or contact center next to your phone system.

Signs you've outgrown Vonage

  • You need desk phones or video and pay $29.99 a user monthly for Premium.
  • You need more than 15 hours of call recording a month.
  • You run 5 or more lines month to month at $17.99 each, when Zoom Phone at $18 monthly includes more.
  • You text customers at volume and keep hitting registration fees and limits.

What would 1, 3 or 5 users pay?

Monthly cost before taxes and fees. Vonage rows show the no-contract price and the 1-year contract price.

How we got there: Vonage Mobile drops to $17.99 a user at 5 users, so 5 x $17.99 = $89.95. Premium is $27.99 at 5 users, so $139.95. Grasshopper is a flat plan, $25 covers Solo Plus with 3 extensions and $55 covers Small Business.

The honest read: a 3-person office on Vonage Premium month to month pays $89.97. Zoom Phone monthly is $54 and Ooma Office Essentials $59.85, with no contract either way.

Best Vonage alternatives by business type

Ooma Office: best Vonage alternative for an office with desk phones

Ooma Office Essentials is $19.95 per user a month with no contract. Pro at $24.95 adds video and call recording.

  • Where it beats Vonage: no contract on any plan. Video for $5 less than Vonage Premium month to month. Free toll-free number.
  • Where it falls short: Sonary users flagged call quality and taxes and fees that pushed the bill higher than expected.
  • Skip it if: you need deep CRM integrations.
  • Moving from Vonage: Ooma advertises free number transfer.

Google Voice: best for small teams on Google Workspace

Google Voice Starter is $10 per user a month, Standard $20 adds auto attendants and ring groups.

  • Where it beats Vonage: half Vonage's no-contract price. Calls, texts and voicemail inside Gmail and Calendar.
  • Where it falls short: needs a paid Workspace plan. Starter caps at 10 users. Available in a limited set of countries.
  • Skip it if: your business runs on Microsoft 365.
  • Moving from Vonage: a Workspace admin ports numbers from the admin console.

Grasshopper: best for a solo owner on a cell phone

Grasshopper True Solo is $14 a month billed yearly. It adds a business number to the phone you already carry.

  • Where it beats Vonage: flat price per account, not per user. Free port-in. 7-day trial with no card.
  • Where it falls short: no desk phones. Sonary's review says it does not scale well past 15-20 users. Grasshopper does not document E911 support.
  • Skip it if: you need an office phone system.
  • Moving from Vonage: Grasshopper ports your number at no cost.

Zoom Phone: best for teams already on Zoom

Zoom Phone Unlimited is $16 a user billed yearly or $18 monthly for US and Canada calling.

  • Where it beats Vonage: month to month costs only $2 more than annual. Calls, meetings and chat in one app.
  • Where it falls short: international calling needs a higher plan.
  • Skip it if: your team does not use Zoom.

See Zoom Phone features on our Zoom review.

RingCentral: best like-for-like suite

RingCentral Core is $20 a user billed yearly or $30 monthly.

  • Where it beats Vonage: more integrations and stronger multi-site management.
  • Where it falls short: costs more month to month. Annual terms renew for the same length unless you give 30 days' notice.
  • Skip it if: price is your main reason to leave.

Read our RingCentral vs Vonage comparison and RingCentral alternatives.

Nextiva: best for teams that text customers

Nextiva Core is $15 per user a month on a 12-month agreement, Engage $25.

  • Where it beats Vonage: 100 texts per user on Core and 500 on Engage. Free porting. AI call notes included.
  • Where it falls short: no free trial. The annual term is a contract too.
  • Skip it if: you want to stay month to month.

Phone.com: best for month to month with desk phones

Phone.com Basic is $15 a user billed yearly with 500 minutes, and higher plans add desk phones.

  • Where it beats Vonage: no long-term contract. 24/7 support on every plan.
  • Where it falls short: Basic caps minutes at 500. Recording costs extra below Pro.
  • Skip it if: you make a lot of outbound calls on a single line.

GoTo Connect: best of the Vonage alternatives for international calls

GoTo Connect includes free calls to 50 countries and now sells by quote.

  • Where it beats Vonage: international calling in the base plan.
  • Where it falls short: no public prices. A Sonary user at an 11-50 person firm said it needs setup work.
  • Skip it if: you want to buy online today.

Vonage alternatives for home phone users

Sonary reviews business phone systems, not home phone services. Vonage for Home is still sold from $9.99 a month with no annual contract and can be cancelled online. If you want a free option for personal calls, Google Voice has a $0 plan for individuals that needs an existing mobile number. See how to get a business number for free.

How do you leave Vonage without losing your numbers?

  1. Find your contract end date and any early termination fee in the Vonage admin portal.
  2. Sign up with the new provider and submit the port request with a recent Vonage bill, your account number, PIN and the exact billing address.
  3. Keep Vonage active until the port completes, usually 1-2 weeks.
  4. Register E911 addresses on the new system.
  5. Re-register business texting on the new provider.
  6. Export call recordings and voicemails.
  7. Cancel through the admin portal or customer care and get the confirmation in writing.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • What is the monthly price without an annual term?
  • Does the term renew automatically, and how much notice do I need to give?
  • How is the early termination fee calculated?
  • Is porting in free, and will you help me port out later?
  • What taxes and fees will my bill show at my address?
  • How do remote workers register their E911 address?
  • Which features (recording, video, CRM) need a higher plan?

We checked vendor pricing and terms pages, and organized the list by how small businesses take calls, not by feature count. We also kept this list different from our RingCentral, Dialpad, 8x8 and Aircall pages, so each one answers its own question. Sonary may earn a commission from some providers. That never decides who appears or in what order.
