Why do teams leave Zendesk?
Cost is the main reason, and it grows in two directions at once: per agent and per AI resolution.
- Per-agent pricing: every new agent adds $55-$115 a month, and Capterra reviewers repeatedly mention "limited functions within Zendesk without buying add ons".
- AI billed by outcome: Zendesk includes AI agents in every Suite plan but charges for automated resolutions past the plan's allowance, and it does not publish a per-resolution price. Since 18 May 2026 only a "Verified Resolution" counts toward that allowance.
- Admin load: reviewers describe a "steep learning curve for admins". A 4-person team rarely has an admin to spare.
- Annual terms: the headline prices are the paid-yearly rates, so the cheapest option locks you in for 12 months.
What does a 5-agent team pay on each alternative?
Read the table as the monthly list price for 5 agents on annual billing, taken from each vendor's pricing page on 23 September 2026. AI costs are listed separately because each vendor bills them differently.
Help desk | Plan | 5 agents / month | How AI is billed |
|---|---|---|---|
Zendesk | Suite Team | $275 (+$250 Copilot) | Automated resolutions past the allowance, price not published |
Zendesk | Suite Professional | $575 | Same |
HubSpot Service Hub | Starter | $35 | 50 credits per resolved conversation, extra credits $9 per 1,000 |
HubSpot Service Hub | Professional | $450 + $1,500 one-time onboarding | Same |
Intercom | Essential | $145 | Fin from $0.99 per outcome |
LiveChat | Team | $245 | AI product "Text" from $19 |
Zoho Desk | Free | $0 for up to 3 users | Zia AI on higher tiers only |
Zoho Desk paid plans are left out because its pricing page returned non-US prices during research - confirm the US figures before publishing. Salesforce is left out because pricing depends on the Salesforce edition you already own.
Zoho Desk: the cheapest serious Zendesk replacement?
For a small team, yes - Zoho Desk has a free plan for 3 users with email ticketing, and Sonary's review rates it 4.7 as the pick for "small teams seeking affordable automation". It also includes built-in telephony. The limit to know before you move: Zia, Zoho's AI assistant, is only on the Enterprise tier.
HubSpot Service Hub: better than Zendesk if sales and support overlap?
Yes, and that is the only reason to pick it - tickets, deals and contacts sit in one CRM record, so the rep who closed the deal sees the support history. Starter is $7 per seat a month billed annually, and the free plan covers 2 users. Professional jumps to $90 per seat plus a $1,500 onboarding fee, so price the full year before you commit. Sonary's HubSpot vs Zendesk comparison goes deeper.
Intercom: is AI support cheaper outside Zendesk?
It is more predictable - Intercom publishes its AI price: Fin starts at $0.99 per outcome, on top of Essential at $29, Advanced at $85 or Expert at $132 per seat a month billed annually. Zendesk does not publish a per-resolution price at all. Sonary's review calls Intercom cost-effective for very small teams and flags weaker ticket tracking and no WhatsApp integration.
LiveChat and Salesforce: who should pick them?
LiveChat is for stores that only need website chat - Starter is $19 and Team $49 per agent a month billed annually, with a 14-day trial and no card required. Sonary's review notes it only supports website visitors. Salesforce Service Cloud is the opposite case: pick it only if your company already runs Salesforce CRM. Sonary's review warns that deployment "can be difficult and time-consuming", which is the pain you were trying to escape.
