The best Intercom alternative for a small support team is Zoho Desk on cost, HubSpot Service Hub if sales and support share one CRM, and LiveChat if all you need is website chat. Intercom charges per seat, then adds a charge for every outcome its Fin AI agent delivers - and under the outcome pricing Intercom announced on 12 March 2026, a handoff to a human counts as an outcome, not only a resolved conversation. The Intercom competitors below are alternatives to Intercom. Sonary reviews for customer support software, not door intercom systems. For current Intercom plan prices, see our Intercom review.

What changed at Intercom in 2026?
Three things, all this year. On 12 March 2026 Intercom announced it was moving Fin billing from "resolutions" to "outcomes", which also counts procedure handoffs. Intercom has not published the date the change took effect. On 12 May 2026 the company renamed itself Fin, while the helpdesk product kept the Intercom name. On 15 June 2026 Salesforce signed an agreement to acquire Fin for about $3.6B, expected to close in Salesforce's fiscal Q4 2027 and still subject to regulatory approval. Salesforce's announcement says nothing about the Intercom product's future.
Why do teams leave Intercom?
Mostly because the monthly bill moves every month.
- Seats plus outcomes: every agent seat is billed, then every Fin outcome, then add-ons such as Copilot. A busy month costs more even with the same team.
- Roadmap uncertainty: a pending acquisition and a company rename leave teams unsure what their helpdesk looks like in two years.
- Account and support problems: Sonary's own review flags that "account management could be horrible", and recent user reviews describe billing after cancellation.
- More than you need: a 3-person team answering website chat does not need a full customer service suite.
Which Intercom alternative fits your team?
Read the table as: what you want to stop paying for, the Sonary-reviewed switch, and the trade-off.
What you want to stop | Switch to | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Metered AI charges | Zoho Desk | Zia AI only on higher tiers, live chat on Enterprise |
Running support outside the CRM | HubSpot Service Hub | $1,500 onboarding fee on Professional |
Paying for a suite | LiveChat | Website visitors only, no email ticketing depth |
Outgrowing chat-only support | Zendesk | Also bills AI per verified resolution |
Separate systems on a Salesforce stack | Salesforce Service Cloud | Harder to deploy, and Salesforce is buying Intercom anyway |
Zoho Desk: the flat-cost Intercom alternative?
For a small team, yes - Zoho Desk has a free plan for 3 users and charges per agent, with no per-conversation AI fee on top. It is one of the highest-rated help desks on Sonary, and our review calls it good value with built-in telephony. Check the plan before you commit: Zia AI sits on higher tiers and SalesIQ live chat on Enterprise, so a chat-first team needs the right tier.
HubSpot Service Hub: the Intercom alternative with a CRM built in
Yes, because chat, tickets and deals live on one contact record. The free plan covers 2 users and includes HubSpot-branded live chat, and AI runs on HubSpot credits you can see in advance. Professional adds a $1,500 one-time onboarding fee, so price the full year first. Sonary's HubSpot vs Zendesk comparison shows how its help desk compares.
LiveChat: the alternative to Intercom live chat?
LiveChat does one job - website chat - with a 14-day trial and plans starting at $19 per seat a month billed annually. Sonary's review likes the setup and warns it "only supports website visitors". It fits a small store that never needed Intercom's product tours and outbound messaging.
Zendesk and Salesforce: when do you need a bigger platform?
When chat is only one of your channels. Zendesk handles email, phone and social tickets in one queue, but it also bills AI per verified resolution, so it does not escape metered AI - see our Zendesk alternatives if cost is the issue. Salesforce Service Cloud fits teams already on Salesforce CRM. Given the pending acquisition, it is also where Intercom itself may end up.
What exactly Intercom charges you for
Intercom's bill has two moving parts: seats ($29 Essential, $85 Advanced, $132 Expert per seat a month, annual) and Fin outcomes at $0.99 each. Intercom's help center defines what counts:
- A resolution, when Fin handles the issue end to end.
- A procedure handoff, when Fin gathers context, takes action and passes the conversation to a human because you set it up that way.
- An assumed resolution, when the customer leaves the conversation without asking for more help. Silence is billed as success.
Handoffs triggered by default behaviour or workspace rules are not billed, and you can set usage reminders and hard limits. Annual plans cannot remove seats mid-term. Two company events add uncertainty: on 12 May 2026 the company renamed itself Fin, and on 15 June 2026 Salesforce signed an agreement to buy it for about $3.6 billion, pending regulatory approval. A mid-market support manager (June 2026) summed up the day-to-day: "every month there's extra fees involved".
Intercom competitors compared: who each one fits
Alternative | Best for | Not for | What fixes the Intercom pain | Watch out for | Moving from Intercom |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Zoho Desk | Cost-sensitive SMB teams, especially inside Zoho | Product-led SaaS teams that rely on an in-app messenger and tours | Seat-only pricing with AI included in the plan, free plan for 3 users | Live chat runs through Zoho SalesIQ, and US prices were not visible on Zoho's page [KD: confirm $14 / $23 / $40] | Free Zwitch migration lists Intercom as a source: tickets, threads, attachments and KB articles. KB attachments do not move |
HubSpot Service Hub | SMB and mid-market teams already on HubSpot CRM | Teams that want AI with zero consumption billing | AI agent at 50 credits ($0.50) per resolved conversation, with a global credit cap that pauses it | Professional is $90 a seat plus a $1,500 onboarding fee. A resolution means no handoff within 72 hours, the same silence rule as Intercom | KB importer crawls your Intercom help center URL (Professional+). Chat history needs the API or a third-party tool |
LiveChat | Ecommerce and sales-led website chat with human agents | Anyone who wants AI deflection without a per-resolution fee | Plain seat pricing ($19 / $49 / $79 annual), Copilot reply suggestions on every plan | Starter keeps 60 days of history, the AI agent is a separate product at $0.99 per extra resolution | No documented Intercom importer |
Zendesk | Email-heavy multichannel teams of 10+ | Teams leaving Intercom to escape unclear AI metering | Only verified resolutions count, with an option to pause the AI when the allowance runs out | The per-resolution price is not published, Copilot is +$50 per agent | No native UI importer, API or paid services |
Salesforce Service Cloud | Teams already on Salesforce, or expecting Fin to land there anyway | Small chat-first teams that want to be live in days | Choose how AI is billed: $2 per conversation, Flex Credits or a per-user unlimited add-on | Annual contracts, Pro Suite $100 per user, deployment takes time | No Intercom importer verified |
There is a sixth option most teams miss: keep Fin and change the helpdesk. Fin runs on Salesforce, HubSpot, Zoho and others at $0.99 per outcome with no Intercom seats, though minimum commitments apply.
Best Intercom alternatives by team type
1. A 5-agent SaaS team with about 1,000 AI-handled conversations a month - HubSpot, if you already use HubSpot CRM.
Option | Math | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
Intercom Advanced | 5 × $85 + 1,000 × $0.99 | $1,415 |
HubSpot Service Hub Professional | 5 × $90 + 47,000 extra credits × $0.01 | about $920, plus $1,500 once |
The HubSpot figure assumes the 3,000 included credits apply per account [KD: confirm per account or per seat].
2. An 8-person ecommerce chat team, mostly human agents - LiveChat Team. 8 × $49 = $392 a month billed annually, with no metering. Skip Starter, whose 60-day history is too short for order disputes.
3. Twelve agents, budget first, happy to rebuild workflows - Zoho Desk Professional. 12 × $23 = $276 a month at Sonary's listed price, with AI in the plan and a free Zwitch migration of Intercom tickets and contacts.
How do you leave Intercom without losing conversations?
- Check your contract. Annual plans cannot drop seats mid-term, contract customers cancel through their account manager, and monthly plans cancel in Settings > Subscription > Billing.
- Export conversations before access ends. After a subscription lapses the data is kept but you cannot open it. CSV exports are metadata only, so use PDF or text batches in the app, or JSON to S3 with attachments. The API works in 90-day windows.
- Export contacts as CSV. The email link expires after 1 hour.
- Export help center articles through the Articles API or a third-party tool. There is no native export.
- Plan to rebuild Fin procedures, workflows and custom answers in the new tool [KD: no vendor page confirms these cannot export].
- Remove the Intercom messenger snippet and every Intercom call from your site and app code.
- Set usage caps in the new tool from day one: HubSpot's credit limit, Zendesk's "Don't allow overage", or Fin's hard limits.
Questions to ask before you sign
- What exactly counts as a billable AI resolution, and is a customer who goes quiet billed?
- Can I set a hard cap that pauses the AI, not just an alert?
- What is the per-resolution price, in writing?
- Can I remove seats mid-term on an annual plan?
- Are there onboarding or migration fees, and does migration include chat transcripts?
- Which plan includes live web chat, and how long is history kept?
- Are included AI credits per account or per seat, and do they roll over?
